Little Warrior
Victor and Adrian jumped out of their lounge chairs and dropped their pepsi bottles and cheered loudly as a young indian woman glided past the defence and soared through the air to dunk the ball. They hugged each other and jumped up and down along with the young indian women on the fuzzy T.V. screen.
Lucy was no longer the little indian girl with scarred knees wearing her daddy's shirt. Lucy was now playing for the WNBA and was nicknamed the "Little Warrior." She plays for the Washington Mystics which we consider our home team. Even though we live in Idaho the closest team state was the Washington Mystics. Lucy was never tall and she was nowhere near as tall as the people on her team but she was the most aggressive player by far. She learned the hard way playing with the sixth grade boys on the reservation while she was still in third grade. Victor and Adrian tell everyone how they knew that she was the one that was going to make it all the way. Then again everyone on the reservation says that too. Lucy finished middle school on the reservation and then moved out and started high school in a white neighbourhood. She was never the smartest student in class but she made up for it with her basketball. Her high school (Jefferson High school) won everything while Lucy was playing.

From there Lucy was recruited by Washington State University and was given a full scholarship. There Lucy went down the wrong path for a while being dropped by the State University Team after coming to a practice drunk. She came back to the reservation for a year where she barely went anywhere besides the powwow tavern. People in the reservation told everyone that they did not expect this to happen to Lucy. But deep inside we all knew that Lucy like many others before her would not make it all the way. The something changed for Lucy, no one quite knows what happened. People say it was the death of her basketball loving father but nobody knows for sure. Suddenly she just stopped going to the powwow tavern and soon she was all packed up and had left the reservation for good and headed back to Washington State University.
From there on Lucy remained on the right path and finished college with a bachelor in education. She says that she hasn't even touched a bottle since she left the reservation, and we all believe her. The next time we saw Lucy was on T.V. The whole town had crowded into small commons area and squinted our eyes at the T.V. resting high above. This was her first game for the Washington Mystics and from the way she played I think she knew that everyone back home was watching her and cheering her on. She scored 32 points and won her team the game. From that day on Lucy started every game. She also won the championship 2 years in a row with the Washington Mystics. Ever since that very first game Victor and Adrian along with everyone else on the reservation has never missed a game Lucy plays.
